The upper band of the Bollinger Bands is a standard deviation multiplied by an input factor above the simple moving average, while the lower band is the standard deviation multiplied by the same input factor below the simple moving average. The standard deviation is a statistical measure adapted for the technical analysis through Bollinger Bands. Bollinger Bands consist of a middle band with two outer bands. The middle band is a simple moving average that is usually set at 20 periods. A simple moving average is used because the standard deviation formula also uses a simple moving average. The look-back period for the standard deviation is the same as for the simple moving average. The outer Bollinger Bands are 2 standard deviations away from the mean. This means if the price is in the lower band, it’s considered “cheap”. And if it’s in the upper band, it’s considered “expensive”.
